He made his way as a draper and tea dealer in Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire and as a linen draper in Liverpool. There is a section on Andersons, Corsons, McCheynes and McKays in Durisdeer, Glencairn, Moniaive and Dumfries.

The book was written by Innes Macleod and Margaret Maxwell.
