Gretenhow, Gratney, Graitney and now known as Gretna Parish. Gretna stretches along the shores of the Solway Firth and borders England. Because of its situation, Gretna was a place with a history of border raiders or reivers, with much violence and little peace for centuries.

From the middle of the 18th century, ‘runaway marriages’ made Gretna a household name round the world. This booklet is not only a history of Gretna but shows the relationship between the Kirk (Church), the parishioners and how this affected daily lives.
